What is true for cyanobacteria?
- Oxygenic with nitrogenase
- Oxygenic without nitrogenase
- Non-oxygenic with nitrogenase
- Non-oxygenic without nitrogenase
Answer
(1) Oxygenic with nitrogenase
Solution
As per NCERT, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have chlorophyll a similar to green plants and are photosynthetic autotrophs ⇒ they carry out oxygenic photosynthesis (water is the electron donor and O2 is released).
Some of them, e.g. Nostoc and Anabaena, can fix atmospheric nitrogen in specialised cells called heterocysts, which contain the enzyme nitrogenase.
∴ Cyanobacteria are oxygenic and possess nitrogenase.
