In ferns, meiosis takes place at the time of

  1. spore formation
  2. spore germination
  3. gamete formation
  4. antheridia and archegonia formation

Answer

(1) spore formation

Solution

As per NCERT, the main plant body of a pteridophyte (fern) is the diploid sporophyte.

⇒ The sporangia bear spore mother cells (2n), which undergo meiosis to form haploid spores.

∵ Spores germinate by mitosis into the haploid prothallus, and gametes are formed by mitosis in the haploid antheridia and archegonia.

∴ In ferns, meiosis takes place at the time of spore formation.
