Which one of the following is not a lateral meristem ?

  1. Interfascicular cambium
  2. Intercalary meristem
  3. Intrafascicular cambium
  4. Phellogen

Answer

(2) Intercalary meristem

Solution

As per NCERT, the meristems that occur in the mature regions of roots and shoots and produce secondary tissues are lateral meristems: fascicular vascular cambium (intrafascicular cambium), interfascicular cambium and cork cambium (phellogen).

Intercalary meristem occurs between mature tissues (e.g. at the base of nodes in grasses); like the apical meristem it is a primary meristem, not a lateral one.
