Steps taken by the Government of India to control air pollution include :

  1. Permission to use only pure diesel with a maximum of 500 ppm sulphur as fuel for vehicles
  2. Compulsory PUC (Pollution Under Control) certification of petrol driven vehicles which tests for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons
  3. Use of non-polluting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) only as fuel by all buses and trucks
  4. Compulsory mixing of 20% ethyl alcohol with petrol and 20% biodiesel with diesel

Answer

(2) Compulsory PUC (Pollution Under Control) certification of petrol driven vehicles which tests for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons

Solution

Pollution Under Control (PUC) certification is compulsory for vehicles; the test checks the exhaust for carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.

As per NCERT, the other steps are different: sulphur in diesel was reduced to 350 ppm (not 500 ppm), CNG was made compulsory only for public transport in Delhi (not all buses and trucks everywhere), and no compulsory 20% blending was ordered.
