Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A), and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- A is true but R is false
- A is false but R is true
- Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
- Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A
Answer
(3) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
Solution
As per NCERT, the Golgi apparatus principally performs the function of packaging materials, to be delivered either to the intra-cellular targets or secreted outside the cell. ⇒ A is true.
As per NCERT, materials to be packaged, in the form of vesicles from the ER, fuse with the cis (forming) face of the Golgi apparatus and move towards the trans (maturing) face; many proteins made on the ER are modified in the Golgi cisternae before they are released from its trans face. ⇒ R is true.
∵ The materials packaged by the Golgi are those received from the ER: they enter at the cis face, are modified in the cisternae and leave the trans face as vesicles for intracellular targets or secretion.
∴ R explains how the Golgi apparatus carries out its packaging and delivery function, i.e. R is the correct explanation of A.
