Even in absence of pollinating agents seed-setting is assured in

  1. Commelina
  2. Zostera
  3. Salvia
  4. fig.

Answer

(1) Commelina

Solution

As per NCERT, Commelina produces two types of flowers — chasmogamous flowers and cleistogamous flowers which do not open at all.

⇒ In cleistogamous flowers the anthers and stigma lie close to each other; anthers dehisce in the flower bud and pollen falls on the stigma.

⇒ Thus cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous and assured seed-set even in the absence of pollinators.

⇒ Zostera needs water, Salvia needs insects and fig needs the fig wasp for pollination.

∴ Seed-setting is assured in Commelina.
