At what stage of the cell cycle are histone proteins synthesized in a eukaryotic cell?

  1. During G2 stage of prophase
  2. During S-phase
  3. During entire prophase
  4. During telophase

Answer

(2) During S-phase

Solution

As per NCERT, DNA replication takes place during the S or synthesis phase of interphase, and the amount of DNA per cell doubles.

⇒ The new DNA must be packed into nucleosomes at once, so the histone proteins needed for this are synthesised in the same phase.

∴ Histone proteins are synthesised during the S-phase.
