How many ATP molecules are produced by aerobic oxidation of one molecule of glucose?

  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. 38
  4. 34

Answer

(3) 38

Solution

As per NCERT (respiratory balance sheet), there can be a net gain of 38 ATP molecules during aerobic respiration of one molecule of glucose:

Glycolysis: 2 ATP (net, substrate level); 2 NADH ⇒ 6 ATP

Link reaction: 2 NADH ⇒ 6 ATP

Krebs cycle: 2 GTP ⇒ 2 ATP; 6 NADH ⇒ 18 ATP; 2 FADH2 ⇒ 4 ATP

∴ Total = 2 + 6 + 6 + 2 + 18 + 4 = 38 ATP

Answer: (3)
