During seed germination its stored food is mobilized by

  1. ABA
  2. gibberellin
  3. ethylene
  4. cytokinin.

Answer

(2) gibberellin

Solution

As per NCERT, gibberellins promote seed germination and are used to speed up the malting process in brewing.

⇒ In germinating cereal grains, gibberellin from the embryo induces the aleurone layer to synthesise hydrolytic enzymes such as -amylase.

⇒ These enzymes hydrolyse starch and other reserves of the endosperm into soluble sugars, which the growing embryo uses.

∵ ABA inhibits seed germination (promotes dormancy), ethylene and cytokinin have no such role.

∴ Stored food is mobilised by gibberellin.
