How many ATP and NADPH molecules are required to make one molecule of glucose through the Calvin pathway ?
- 12 ATP and 18 NADPH
- 18 ATP and 12 NADPH
- 6 ATP and 12 NADPH
- 24 ATP and 18 NADPH
Answer
(2) 18 ATP and 12 NADPH
Solution
As per NCERT, fixing one molecule of CO2 through the Calvin cycle requires 3 ATP and 2 NADPH.
∵ One glucose ( C6H12O6) needs 6 turns of the cycle (6 CO2),
⇒ ATP required = 6 3 = 18
⇒ NADPH required = 6 2 = 12
∴ 18 ATP and 12 NADPH
Answer: (2)
