Which of the following statements is not correct?
- Pollen germination and pollen tube growth are regulated by chemical components of pollen interacting with those of the pistil.
- Some reptiles have also been reported as pollinators in some plant species.
- Pollen grains of many species can germinate on the stigma of a flower, but only one pollen tube of the same species grows into the style.
- Insects that consume pollen or nectar without bringing about pollination are called pollen/nectar robbers.
Answer
(3) Pollen grains of many species can germinate on the stigma of a flower, but only one pollen tube of the same species grows into the style.
Solution
As per NCERT, after a compatible pollination the pollen grain germinates on the stigma and the pollen tube grows through the tissues of the stigma and style; pollen grains of the same species are accepted and several of their tubes can grow into the style.
⇒ The pistil rejects only incompatible pollen (of other species or self-incompatible), so statement (3) is not correct.
Statements (1), (2) and (4) are as given in NCERT (pollen–pistil interaction, reptiles such as some lizards and geckos as pollinators, pollen/nectar robbers).
