Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. A is true but R is false
  2. A is false but R is true
  3. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
  4. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A

Answer

(4) Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A

Solution

As per NCERT, both wind and water pollinated flowers are not very colourful and do not produce nectar, because they do not have to attract animal pollinators. ⇒ A is true.

Wind- and water-pollinated flowers produce an enormous amount of pollen grains to make up for the heavy loss of pollen during transport by these abiotic agents. ⇒ R is true.

∵ The large output of pollen only compensates for the wastage of pollen; it is not the reason for the absence of colour and nectar.

∴ Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

Answer: (4)
