A body of mass m is placed on earth's surface which is taken from earth surface to a height of h = 3R, then change in gravitational potential energy is

  1. mgR4
  2. 23mgR
  3. 34mgR
  4. mgR2

Answer

(3) 34mgR

Solution

As per NCERT, gravitational potential energy at distance r from the centre of the earth is U = - GMmr.

At the surface: U1 = - GMmR

At height h = 3R, i.e. r = 4R: U2 = - GMm4R

⇒ U = U2 - U1 = GMmR (1 - 14 ) = 34 GMmR

∵ GM = gR2

∴ U = 34mgR
