Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 29 January (Evening Shift)

A stone of mass 900 g is tied to a string and moved in a vertical circle of radius 1 m making 10 rpm. The tension in the string, when the stone is at the lowest point is (if 2=9.8 and g=9.8 m/s2) :

  1. 17.8 N
  2. 97 N
  3. 9.8 N
  4. 8.82 N

Answer

(3) 9.8 N

Solution

[figure]

m=0.9 kg, = 2 N60= 2 1060= 3 rad/s

Lowest point: T-mg=m 2r

T=0.9 9.8+0.9 29 1

=8.82+0.9 9.89=8.82+0.98=9.8 N

At the lowest point T acts up, mg down; their difference gives the centripetal force.
