Let the values of for which the shortest distance between the lines x-12 = y-23 = z-34 and x- 3 = y-44 = z-55 is 1 6 be 1 and 2. Then the radius of the circle passing through the points (0, 0), ( 1, 2) and ( 2, 1) is

  1. 3
  2. 5 23
  3. 23
  4. 4

Answer

(2) 5 23

Solution

Line 1 passes through a1 = i + 2 j + 3 k with b1 = 2 i + 3 j + 4 k.

Line 2 passes through a2 = i + 4 j + 5 k with b2 = 3 i + 4 j + 5 k.

b1 b2 = vmatrix i & j & k \ 2 & 3 & 4 \ 3 & 4 & 5 vmatrix = - i + 2 j - k, | b1 b2| = 6

a2 - a1 = ( - 1) i + 2 j + 2 k

Shortest distance = |( a2 - a1) ( b1 b2)|| b1 b2| = |-( - 1) + 4 - 2| 6 = |3 - | 6

|3 - | 6 = 1 6 = 2, 4

The points are (0, 0), (2, 4) and (4, 2).

Circle through the origin: x2 + y2 + 2gx + 2fy = 0

(2, 4): 20 + 4g + 8f = 0 g + 2f = -5

(4, 2): 20 + 8g + 4f = 0 2g + f = -5

g = f = - 53

r = g2 + f2 = 509 = 5 23
