Intermediates formed during reaction of [figure] with Br2 and KOH are

  1. RCONHBr and RNCO
  2. RNHCOBr and RNCO
  3. RNH-Br and RCONHBr
  4. RCONBr2

Answer

(1) RCONHBr and RNCO

Solution

This is the Hoffmann bromamide degradation reaction (NCERT). Its steps are:

RCONH2 + Br2 + KOH RCONHBr + KBr + H2O (N-bromoamide)

RCONHBr + KOH RCO NBr + K+ + H2O

The anion loses Br and R migrates from C to N, giving the isocyanate R-N=C=O.

RNCO + 2KOH RNH2 + K2CO3

The intermediates are RCONHBr and RNCO.
