Which of the following is not a characteristic feature during mitosis in somatic cells?

  1. Chromosome movement
  2. Synapsis
  3. Spindle fibres
  4. Disappearance of nucleolus

Answer

(2) Synapsis

Solution

As per NCERT, synapsis is the pairing of homologous chromosomes during zygotene of prophase I of meiosis.

⇒ Homologous chromosomes do not pair in mitosis.

∵ Chromosome movement, spindle fibres and disappearance of the nucleolus are all seen in mitosis,

∴ synapsis is not a feature of mitosis.
