During which stage in the complete oxidation of glucose are the greatest number of ATP molecules formed from ADP?

  1. Glycolysis
  2. Krebs' cycle
  3. Conversion of pyruvic acid to acetyl CoA
  4. Electron transport chain

Answer

(4) Electron transport chain

Solution

ATP yield from one glucose molecule (aerobic respiration):

Glycolysis: net 2 ATP (substrate level)

Pyruvic acid → acetyl CoA: no ATP directly (only NADH)

Krebs' cycle: 2 ATP (GTP) directly

Electron transport chain: oxidation of 10 NADH and 2 FADH2 gives about 34 ATP by oxidative phosphorylation

⇒ Total = 2 + 2 + 34 = 38 ATP

∴ The greatest number of ATP molecules is formed in the electron transport chain.
