In which of the following options the order of arrangement does not agree with the variation of property indicated against it ?

  1. I < Br < Cl < F (increasing electron gain enthalpy)
  2. Li < Na < K < Rb (increasing metallic radius)
  3. Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < F- (increasing ionic size)
  4. B < C < N < O (increasing first ionisation enthalpy)

Answer

(1) I < Br < Cl < F (increasing electron gain enthalpy), (4) B < C < N < O (increasing first ionisation enthalpy)

Solution

(1) As per NCERT, Cl has the most negative electron gain enthalpy; F is less negative than Cl because of its small size (strong inter-electronic repulsion in the compact 2p subshell).

⇒ Correct order of magnitude: I < Br < F < Cl ⇒ the given order does not agree.

(2) Metallic radius increases down the group: Li < Na < K < Rb ⇒ agrees.

(3) Isoelectronic species (10 electrons): size decreases as nuclear charge increases ⇒ Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < F- ⇒ agrees.

(4) ∵ N has a stable half-filled 2p3 configuration, its first ionisation enthalpy is higher than that of O.

⇒ Correct order: B < C < O < N ⇒ the given order does not agree.

∴ Options (1) and (4) do not agree with the property indicated.

Answer: (1), (4)

The formation of the oxide ion, O2-(g) from oxygen atom requires first an exothermic and then an endothermic step as shown below: O(g) + e- O-(g); H = -141 kJ mol-1 O-(g) + e- O2-(g); H = +780 kJ mol-1 Thus, process of formation of O2- in gas phase is unfavourable even though O2- is isoelectronic with neon. It is due to the fact that,

  1. O- ion has comparatively smaller size than oxygen atom
  2. oxygen is more electronegative
  3. addition of electron in oxygen results in larger size of the ion
  4. electron repulsion outweighs the stability gained by achieving noble gas configuration.
