In a chloroplast the highest number of protons are found in
- intermembrane space
- antennae complex
- stroma
- lumen of thylakoids.
Answer
(4) lumen of thylakoids.
Solution
As per NCERT (chemiosmotic hypothesis), protons accumulate inside the thylakoid lumen because:
∵ splitting of water occurs on the inner (lumen) side of the membrane, releasing H+ into the lumen;
∵ the primary acceptor/cytochrome complex pumps H+ from the stroma into the lumen;
∵ NADP reductase removes H+ from the stroma.
⇒ A proton gradient is built across the thylakoid membrane, with the highest H+ concentration (lowest pH) in the lumen.
