Which of the following statements are TRUE about Haloform reaction? Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A, B & C Only
  2. A, C & E Only
  3. B, D & E Only
  4. A & C Only

Answer

(4) A & C Only

Solution

A. NaOCl + KI KOI + NaCl KOI (potassium hypoiodite) is formed. Correct.

B. In OI-, iodine is in +1 oxidation state; it gets reduced to I- and oxidises / iodinates the substrate KOI is an oxidising agent. Incorrect.

C. CH3-CH=CH-CO-CH3 is a methyl ketone (contains CH3CO- group) gives yellow CHI3. Correct.

D. Isopropyl alcohol, CH3CH(OH)CH3, contains the CH3CH(OH)- group; OI- oxidises it to acetone, which then gives iodoform it gives a positive iodoform test. Incorrect.

E. Methanoic acid, HCOOH, has neither CH3CO- nor CH3CH(OH)- group no iodoform. Incorrect.

Only A and C are true.
