When Zn converts from melted state to its solid state, it has hcp structure, then find the number of nearest atoms.

  1. 6
  2. 8
  3. 12
  4. 4

Answer

(3) 12

Solution

As per NCERT, in hexagonal close packing (hcp) each sphere is in contact with 6 spheres in its own layer, 3 spheres in the layer above and 3 spheres in the layer below.

⇒ Number of nearest neighbours (coordination number) = 6 + 3 + 3 = 12

∴ Each Zn atom in the hcp structure has 12 nearest atoms.
