The angular resolution of a 10 cm diameter telescope at a wavelength of 5000 A is of the order of

  1. 106 rad
  2. 10-2 rad
  3. 10-4 rad
  4. 10-6 rad.

Answer

(4) 10-6 rad.

Solution

Limit of resolution (smallest angular separation that can be resolved) of a telescope:

= 1.22 D

Here = 5000 A = 5000 10-10 m = 5 10-7 m and D = 10 cm = 0.1 m

= 1.22 5 10-70.1

= 6.1 10-6 rad

The angular resolution is of the order of 10-6 rad.
