The current i in a coil varies with time as shown in the figure. The variation of induced emf with time would be [figure]

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

Induced emf, e = -L didt

0 to T/4: i increases uniformly didt is constant and positive e is constant and negative

T/4 to T/2: i is constant e = 0

T/2 to 3T/4: i decreases uniformly didt is constant and negative e is constant and positive

3T/4 to T: i = 0 e = 0

The emf is a negative constant pulse from 0 to T/4 and a positive constant pulse from T/2 to 3T/4, as in graph (1).
