Out of 64 codons, 61 codons code for 20 types of amino acids; it is called : -
- Wobbling of codon
- Universality of codons
- Overlapping of gene
- Degeneracy of genetic code
Answer
(4) Degeneracy of genetic code
Solution
As per NCERT, 61 codons code for amino acids and 3 codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) are stop codons.
∵ 61 codons code for only 20 amino acids ⇒ most amino acids are coded by more than one codon (e.g., leucine by six codons).
As per NCERT, some amino acids are coded by more than one codon, hence the code is degenerate.
∴ This property is called degeneracy of the genetic code.
