Types of RNA polymerase required in nucleus for RNA synthesis : -

  1. 2
  2. 3
  3. 1
  4. 4

Answer

(2) 3

Solution

As per NCERT, in eukaryotes there are at least three RNA polymerases in the nucleus (in addition to the RNA polymerase found in organelles):

RNA polymerase I ⇒ rRNAs (28S, 18S and 5.8S)

RNA polymerase II ⇒ precursor of mRNA (hnRNA)

RNA polymerase III ⇒ tRNA, 5S rRNA and snRNAs

∴ 3 types of RNA polymerase are required in the nucleus.

A mutant strain of T4 bacteriophage, R-II, fails to lyse E. coli, but when two strains R-IIX and R-IIY are mixed, they lyse E. coli. What may be the possible reason?

  1. Both strains have different cistrons
  2. Both strains have similar cistrons
