Oxygenic photosynthesis occurs in
- Oscillatoria
- Rhodospirillum
- Chlorobium
- Chromatium
Answer
(1) Oscillatoria
Solution
Oxygenic photosynthesis (with release of O2) needs PS II, which splits water.
⇒ As per NCERT, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have chlorophyll a similar to green plants and are photosynthetic autotrophs; Oscillatoria is a cyanobacterium, so it releases O2.
∵ Rhodospirillum (purple non-sulphur), Chlorobium (green sulphur) and Chromatium (purple sulphur) bacteria do not use water as the electron donor,
∴ their photosynthesis is anoxygenic.
