Cellulose is the major component of cell walls of

  1. Pseudomonas
  2. Saccharomyces
  3. Pythium
  4. Xanthomonas

Answer

(3) Pythium

Solution

Pythium is an oomycete (water mould), placed with the phycomycetes in older classifications; the cell wall of oomycetes is made mainly of cellulose (with glucans).

⇒ As per NCERT, fungal cell walls are composed of chitin and polysaccharides; so the yeast Saccharomyces (a true fungus) has no cellulose wall.

⇒ Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas are bacteria whose cell walls are made of peptidoglycan.

∴ Cellulose is the major component of the cell wall of Pythium.
