The main function of bulliform cells in grasses is :
- to perform photosynthesis.
- to minimize water loss during water stress.
- to make the leaf impermeable to fungal spores.
- to transport water.
Answer
(2) to minimize water loss during water stress.
Solution
As per NCERT, in grasses certain adaxial (upper) epidermal cells along the veins become large, empty and colourless; these are called bulliform cells.
When bulliform cells have absorbed water and are turgid, the leaf surface is exposed.
Under water stress they become flaccid ⇒ the leaf curls (rolls) inwards ⇒ exposed surface decreases ⇒ water loss is minimised.
