The equation of a wave travelling on a string is y = [20 x + 10 t], where x and t are distance and time in SI units. The minimum distance between two points having the same oscillating speed is :

  1. 10 cm
  2. 2.5 cm
  3. 20 cm
  4. 5.0 cm

Answer

(4) 5.0 cm

Solution

Particle velocity: v = y t = 10 (20 x + 10 t)

Oscillating speed |v| = 10 | (20 x + 10 t)|; | | repeats when the phase changes by .

Two points always have the same speed when their phase difference is , i.e. path difference 2

k = 20 = 2 k = 2 20 = 0.1 m

Minimum distance = 2 = 0.05 m = 5.0 cm

Answer: (4)
