In which of the following the hydration energy is higher than the lattice energy?
- MgSO4
- RaSO4
- SrSO4
- BaSO4
Answer
(1) MgSO4
Solution
A salt is soluble in water when its hydration energy is greater than its lattice energy.
As per NCERT, the solubility of alkaline earth metal sulphates decreases down the group: BeSO4 and MgSO4 are readily soluble, while CaSO4, SrSO4, BaSO4 and RaSO4 are sparingly soluble.
∵ The lattice energy of the sulphates (large anion) changes little down the group, but the hydration energy falls sharply as the cation size increases.
⇒ Only for the small Mg2+ ion does the hydration energy exceed the lattice energy.
∴ MgSO4 is the required salt.
