Senescence as an active developmental cellular process in growth and functioning of a flowering plant, is indicated in

  1. annual plants
  2. floral parts
  3. vessels and tracheid differentiation
  4. leaf abscission

Answer

(3) vessels and tracheid differentiation

Solution

Senescence as an active developmental cellular process means programmed cell death that is a part of normal development and functioning.

As per NCERT, during differentiation of a tracheary element the cells lose their protoplasm and develop a strong, elastic lignocellulosic secondary cell wall to carry water to long distances.

⇒ Vessels and tracheids become functional only after their protoplasts die; the death of these cells is an essential step in their development.

∴ Senescence as an active developmental process is seen in the differentiation of vessels and tracheids.
