A 100 resistance and a capacitor of 100 reactance are connected in series across a 220 V source. When the capacitor is 50\% charged, the peak value of the displacement current is

  1. 2.2 A
  2. 11 A
  3. 4.4 A
  4. 11 2 A

Answer

(1) 2.2 A

Solution

As per NCERT, the displacement current between the capacitor plates equals the conduction current in the circuit.

Z = R2 + XC2 = 1002 + 1002 = 100 2

Peak current I0 = V0Z = 220 2100 2

= 2.2 A

The peak value does not depend on how much the capacitor is charged at that instant.

Peak displacement current = 2.2 A
