Which of the following is less general in characters as compared to genus?

  1. Species
  2. Division
  3. Class
  4. Family

Answer

(1) Species

Solution

Taxonomic hierarchy (lowest to highest): species → genus → family → order → class → phylum (division) → kingdom.

As per NCERT, as we go higher from species to kingdom, the number of common characteristics goes on decreasing; i.e. the higher the category, the more general the characters.

∴ Family, class and division are above genus and are more general, while species is below genus.

⇒ Species is less general (more specific) in characters than genus.
