Which of the following is required as inducer(s) for the expression of Lac operon?

  1. lactose
  2. lactose and galactose
  3. glucose
  4. galactose

Answer

(1) lactose

Solution

As per NCERT, lactose is the substrate for the enzyme -galactosidase and it regulates switching on and off of the operon; hence it is termed the inducer.

⇒ The inducer binds the repressor and inactivates it, so RNA polymerase can transcribe the operon.

∴ Lactose is the inducer of the lac operon.
