The living organisms can be unexceptionally distinguished from the non-living things on the basis of their ability for
- interaction with the environment and progressive evolution
- reproduction
- growth and movement
- responsiveness to touch
Answer
(1) interaction with the environment and progressive evolution
Solution
As per NCERT, growth and reproduction cannot be taken as defining properties of living organisms:
∵ non-living objects (mountains, sand mounds) also 'grow' by accumulation of material on the surface, and many organisms (mules, sterile worker bees, infertile human couples) do not reproduce ⇒ (2) and (3) are not exceptionless.
∵ Not every organism responds to touch (only some plants, e.g. Mimosa, and animals do) ⇒ (4) is wrong.
∵ All living organisms sense and interact with their environment (consciousness) and all of them have evolved and continue to evolve ⇒ these two together distinguish every living organism from non-living things.
