Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I: the –OCH3 group is para to the carbocation carbon. The lone pair on O is delocalised through the ring onto the positive carbon (+R effect), spreading the positive charge ⇒ the carbocation is stabilised ⇒ true.

Statement II: the –NO2 group is para to the carbanion carbon. The negative charge is delocalised through the ring onto the oxygen atoms of –NO2 (−R effect) ⇒ the carbanion is stabilised ⇒ true.

(+R groups stabilise carbocations; −R groups stabilise carbanions.)
