Let the product of 1 = (8 + i) + (7 + 4i) and 2 = (1 + 8i) + (4 + 7i) be + i , i = -1. Let p and q be the maximum and the minimum values of + respectively. Then p + q is equal to :

  1. 130
  2. 150
  3. 160
  4. 140

Answer

(1) 130

Solution

1 2 = (8 + i)(1 + 8i) 2 + (7 + 4i)(4 + 7i) 2 + [(8 + i)(4 + 7i) + (7 + 4i)(1 + 8i) ]

(8 + i)(1 + 8i) = 8 + 64i + i - 8 = 65i

(7 + 4i)(4 + 7i) = 28 + 49i + 16i - 28 = 65i

(8 + i)(4 + 7i) + (7 + 4i)(1 + 8i) = (25 + 60i) + (-25 + 60i) = 120i

1 2 = 65i( 2 + 2 ) + 120i = i(65 + 60 2 )

= 0, = 65 + 60 2

-1 2 1 5 + 125

p = 125, q = 5

p + q = 130
