Given below are two statements. One is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. (A) is true but (R) is false
  2. Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A)
  3. (A) is false but (R) is true
  4. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

Answer

(4) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

Solution

SHM: x = A ( t + ), p = m A ( t + )

At t = 0: x0 = A , p0 = m A

A = x02 + ( p0m )2, = m x0p0

So the amplitude and phase are fixed by x0 and p0 (R is true).

With A, φ and ω known, x(t) and p(t) are known at every instant (A is true), and this follows directly from R.

Answer: (4)
