In a p-n junction
- high potential at n side and low potential at p side
- high potential at p side and low potential at n side
- p and n both are at same potential
- undetermined.
Answer
(1) high potential at n side and low potential at p side
Solution
As per NCERT, when a p-n junction is formed, holes diffuse from p to n and electrons from n to p, leaving uncovered negative acceptor ions on the p side and positive donor ions on the n side of the depletion layer.
This space charge sets up an electric field from the n side to the p side and a barrier potential across the junction.
Since the field points from n to p, the n side is at the higher potential and the p side at the lower potential.
High potential at n side and low potential at p side.
