The elements of Group 13 with highest and lowest first ionisation enthalpies are respectively :
- B & Tl
- Tl & B
- B & In
- B & Ga
Answer
(3) B & In
Solution
First ionisation enthalpies of Group 13 elements (in kJ mol-1), as per NCERT:
B = 801, Al = 577, Ga = 579, In = 558, Tl = 589
B is the smallest atom with the highest effective nuclear charge on its 2p electron highest i H1.
From Al to In the size increases, so i H1 falls; Ga is slightly higher than Al because the poorly shielding 3d electrons raise the effective nuclear charge.
Tl has poorly shielding 4f and 5d electrons, so its i H1 (589) rises above that of In.
Highest: B; lowest: In
Answer: (3)
