In stratosphere, which of the following elements acts as a catalyst in degradation of ozone and release of molecular oxygen?

  1. Carbon
  2. Cl
  3. Fe
  4. Oxygen

Answer

(2) Cl

Solution

As per NCERT, UV rays act on CFCs in the stratosphere and release Cl atoms.

Cl atoms degrade ozone and release molecular oxygen; they are not consumed in the reaction and act merely as catalysts:

Cl + O3 ClO + O2

ClO + O Cl + O2

∴ Cl acts as the catalyst.
