Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 29 January (Evening Shift)

Two identical symmetric double convex lenses of focal length f are cut into two equal parts L1, L2 by AB plane and L3, L4 by XY plane as shown in figure respectively. The ratio of focal lengths of lenses L1 and L3 is [figure]

  1. 1:2
  2. 1:1
  3. 2:1
  4. 1:4

Answer

(1) 1:2

Solution

1f=( -1) ( 1R1- 1R2 ); original lens R1=R, R2=-R ⇒ 1f= 2( -1)R

[figure]

L1 (cut along the axis): same two faces ⇒ f1=f

L3 (cut across the axis): R1=R, R2= ⇒ 1f3= -1R= 12f ⇒ f3=2f

∴ f1:f3=1:2

Answer: (1)
