Which of the following is correctly stated as it happens in the common cockroach?

  1. Oxygen is transported by haemoglobin in blood
  2. The food is ground by mandibles and gizzard
  3. Nitrogenous excretory product is urea
  4. Malpighian tubules are excretory organs projecting out from the colon

Answer

(2) The food is ground by mandibles and gizzard

Solution

As per NCERT, in the cockroach the mandibles chew the food, and the gizzard (proventriculus), having an outer layer of thick circular muscles and a thick inner cuticle forming six chitinous plates called teeth, grinds the food particles.

⇒ Blood (haemolymph) is colourless and has no haemoglobin; oxygen reaches the tissues through tracheae.

⇒ Cockroach is uricotelic (excretes uric acid).

⇒ Malpighian tubules are present at the junction of the midgut and hindgut, not on the colon.

Answer: (2)
