Which of the following give positive Fehling solution test?
- Sucrose
- Glucose
- Fats
- Protein
Answer
(2) Glucose
Solution
Fehling solution is reduced (red precipitate of Cu2O) only by reducing sugars, which have a free aldehyde or ketone group.
Glucose has a free –CHO group, so it is a reducing sugar and gives a positive test.
As per NCERT, in sucrose the reducing groups of glucose and fructose are involved in the glycosidic bond, so sucrose is a non-reducing sugar.
Fats and proteins have no free aldehyde group.
