Which of the following is isoelectronic?

  1. CO2, NO2
  2. NO2-, CO2
  3. CN-, CO
  4. SO2, CO2

Answer

(3) CN-, CO

Solution

Isoelectronic species have the same total number of electrons.

⇒ CO2 = 6 + 16 = 22; NO2 = 7 + 16 = 23

⇒ NO2- = 23 + 1 = 24; SO2 = 16 + 16 = 32

⇒ CN- = 6 + 7 + 1 = 14; CO = 6 + 8 = 14

∴ CN- and CO are isoelectronic.
