3-Methylhex-2-ene on reaction with HBr in presence of peroxide forms an addition product (A). The number of possible stereoisomers for 'A' is .

Solution

CH3-CH= CH3 |C-CH2-CH2-CH3 (3-methylhex-2-ene)

HBr / peroxide: Br adds to C-2 ⇒ more stable 3° radical at C-3 (anti-Markovnikov)

⇒ (A) = CH3- *CHBr- *CH(CH3)-CH2-CH2-CH3

∵ C-2 and C-3 are chiral (*) and the molecule is unsymmetrical

∴ Stereoisomers = 2n = 22 = 4

Answer: 4
