Which one of the following monomers gives the polymer neoprene on polymerization?

  1. CH2=CHCl
  2. CCl2=CCl2
  3. [figure]
  4. CF2=CF2

Answer

(3) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, neoprene (polychloroprene) is formed by free radical polymerisation of chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene).

nCH2=C(Cl)-CH=CH2 Polymerisation -[CH2-C(Cl)=CH-CH2]n-

∵ CH2=CHCl gives PVC and CF2=CF2 gives teflon.

∴ The monomer of neoprene is chloroprene, option (3).
