The following two reactions give the same foul smelling product Z. [figure] X and Z, respectively, are :
- X = AgCN; Z = C2H5CN
- X = AgCN; Z = C2H5NC
- X = KCN; Z = C2H5CN
- X = KCN; Z = C2H5NC
Answer
(2) X = AgCN; Z = C2H5NC
Solution
Second reaction:
C2H5CONH2 Br2, NaOH C2H5NH2 (Y) (Hoffmann bromamide degradation)
C2H5NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH C2H5NC + 3KCl + 3H2O (carbylamine reaction)
∴ Z = C2H5NC (ethyl isocyanide, foul smelling).
First reaction: C2H5Cl must give the isocyanide.
∵ As per NCERT, KCN is ionic and gives alkyl cyanides (attack through C), whereas AgCN is mainly covalent and gives isocyanides (attack through N).
⇒ C2H5Cl + AgCN C2H5NC + AgCl ∴ X = AgCN.
