A 1 kg stationary bomb is exploded in three parts having mass 1 : 1 : 3 respectively. The parts having the same mass move in perpendicular directions with velocity 30 m/s, then the velocity of the bigger part will be

  1. 10 2 m/s
  2. 10 2 m/s
  3. 15 2 m/s
  4. 15 2 m/s

Answer

(1) 10 2 m/s

Solution

Masses: 15 kg, 15 kg and 35 kg

Momentum of each small part = 0.2 30 = 6 kg m/s, at right angles

Resultant momentum of the two = 62 + 62 = 6 2 kg m/s

Initial momentum is zero, the bigger part has equal and opposite momentum.

0.6 v = 6 2

v = 10 2 m/s

Answer: (1)
